Here we will cover the 6 most common types of ants found inside the UK.
Black/Garden Ant (Lasius Niger) – These are the evasive types of ants that will somehow find a way into your home. They commonly nest under pavements, in soil and on the edge of a lawn.
Yellow Meadow Ant (Lasius Flavus) – Also found in gardens is the Yellow Meadow Ant. They can build small mounds in the garden and are particularly skilled nest builders. They are rarely seen unless their underground nest is disturbed.
Red Ant (Myrmica Ruba) – These ants are deep red in colour and can carry a painful sting. They generally live in small colonies of up to 300 members. They are quite an aggressive type of ant.
Red Wood Ant/Horse Ant (Formica Rufa) – These ants are typically found in Southern England’s woodland and are quite aggressive towards other colonies. They can amount to up to 100,000 ants per colony and can bite and spray formic acid very effectively.
Black Wood Ant (Formica Fusca) – These are the cousins of the red wood ant and are more timid. They generally nest below rotting logs and have been found nesting in Southern England and the Midlands.
Black Stinging Ant (Tetramorium Caespitum) – The small black stinging ant is found in the southern and western parts of England and each nest can contain up to 30,000 ants per colony.
Flying Ants (Alate) – Normal ants with wings. If you are seeing an increasing number of flying ants near your property then the chances are there is a nest nearby. They fly out of their nest with the goal of mating and can often lead to new colonies being formed.
If you still have trouble with the little pests, then you can call the experts.
Our external Ant Bait Station uses the ants roaming instinct to its advantage, providing an insecticide bait they eat and take back to the nest – effectively eliminating the colony. The tamper-resistant lid allows it to be used safely in areas used by children and pets.
There are over 12,000 ant species worldwide, and they are said to be among some of the longest-living insects. They are also exceptionally strong, given their tiny frame. A single ant has the ability to carry 50 times its body weight. Ants can also work together as a team to move even bigger objects as a group.
Did you know that the largest ever ants nest was found in Argentina in 2000? The nest is a staggering 3,7000 miles wide and houses 33 different ant populations that have merged into one super colony.
